The Reporter Selected As Finalist For College Journalism’s Top Prize

The Reporterthe student newspaper at Miami Dade College—has been selected as a 2021 Pacemaker finalist in the two-year college newspaper category.

PacemakerPacemakers are regarded as the top national award for student journalists. They are selected by the Associated Collegiate Press.

“This is a reflection of our hard work,” said Adriana Dos Santos, who served as the paper’s editor-in-chief last year. “Despite working virtually for most of the year, we kept our community informed. Our staff showed up with a great attitude and did their best.”

Five finalists were selected in the two-year category. Papers were judged based on content produced during the 2020-21 school year.

“In addition to demonstrating excellence in key areas including coverage, writing, editing, design and photography, the winning newspapers took risks and served as a strong voice for the student audience,” according to a press release announcing the finalists.

The Reporter has been a Pacemaker finalist six of the last 11 years, including the last three, but it hasn’t won the prize since 2014. The paper, which was established in 2010, also won the award in 2013.

This year’s winners will be announced virtually on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. during the Fall National College Media Convention.
