Think You Can Ball? Tryout For The MDC Basketball Team
The Miami Dade College men’s and women’s basketball teams are holding open tryouts for potential walk-on spots Wednesday, Sept. 12.
Tryouts will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Gibson Center at Kendall Campus, 11011 SW 104th St.
To be eligible for the team, prospective players need to meet these requirements:
- Students must be enrolled and have 12 credits during the Fall Semester.
- Students must maintain 12 credits and a 2.0 GPA throughout the semester.
- Students must have taken a physical exam within the past year. A copy of the exam must be presented.
- Students must have general insurance.
Coming off a season where the men’s basketball team led the nation in multiple offensive categories but failed to qualify for the state tournament, going 16-14, Sharks head coach Kevin Ledoux hopes to find players who fit his team’s system.
“It’s a high level of competition,” Ledoux said. “We recruit from all over the country; all over the world.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Sharks are hoping to build off the momentum they had last season, when they won 71% of their games and finished 11-1 in conference play. The team was named Southern Conference champions for the first time in ten years.
Lady Sharks assistant coach Erica Redman hopes the tryouts attract players who provide a “push” and motivate the team to meet their potential.
That “diamond in the rough” as Redman said, is what every coach is looking for.
