Unique Chinese Ink Art Exhibition At Wolfson Campus
A new Chinese ink art exhibit titled, Reshuffling the Past: New Ink Paintings From China, is visiting the Wolfson Campus.
The traveling show features 37 ink art pieces by eight contemporary Chinese artists. It is on display at the Wolfson Campus Centre Gallery, 300 N.E. Second Ave. Room 1365.
“Seeing all of these art pieces make me very happy because I see my life in those paintings,” said the director of the Confucius Institute, Xuejun (Jim) Yu. “For example, the scenery of the mountains, rivers and the people are a reflection of who I am and where I originated from. But you also get to see the evolution of a culture and how it developed to what it is today.”
Originally based in China, the exhibition is currently at Miami Dade College from Aug. 26—Nov. 7 before moving onto the University of Maryland and The State University of New York.
The artwork created by the eight artists, who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, has a Western art influence and features calligraphy and children playing hide and seek in the mountains in the night.
In addition, the pieces also show the manifestation of the Chinese culture through the Chinese ink art itself by using traditional white rice paper and black ink. Other works in the exhibit use pastel and vibrant-colored ink in their paintings.
“You realize one thing as you walk through this exhibit, and that is a reminder of this culture,” Mario Mirabal, a student at Wolfson Campus said as he stared at a piece called, The Night-1 by Wu Yi. “This is not just a tribute to the Chinese culture; this culture is a part of these artists and you can see it by their ink paintings.”
The Centre Gallery is open Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public.
