What Is This Facebook You Speak Of?
According to Facebook, there are 1.49 billion monthly users. Until recently, I wasn’t one of them.
On Sept. 20, I decided to see what Facebook had to offer.
“A 20-year-old without Facebook? Impossible,” is usually the reaction I get when I tell people I have never created a Facebook account. This semester my mass communications professor highly encouraged us to get active on social media sites.
After overthinking the situation I decided I should finally work my way toward the Google url-bar and search up Facebook. As expected, everything started running smoothly as I created the account.
Who would have known these blue box pop-ups were going to haunt me through the clicking and ignoring. I’m sure if my mother were looking she’d be making her way around my profile account adding and re-adjusting my information.
Facebook was created primarily for college students yet I haven’t taken part of that era. The site is moving forward with its 1.49 billion users.
Even though I haven’t had Facebook I really don’t feel like I’ve missed much. I do involve myself with other major social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, LinkedIn and much more, but I’ve never really felt out of the loop for not having a Facebook account.
I use other social media sites to get me around. I’ve heard about all the major events occurring through word of mouth or just by doing research. I have never turned to Facebook to keep myself updated.
Creating my account, I found that the first people I decided to follow were family members and I think that’s why Facebook continues to be the top site according to all the stats. It allows everyone to communicate with old friends, family, or people you want to make connections with.
However, for me, Facebook has turned into more of a research and contact site rather than posting funny pictures or reading online news.
I always get different reactions when I tell the story of not having Facebook. People fail to believe that someone could get away with not having one.
Facebook doesn’t signify my social life but it is a door opening opportunity to make new connections. It allows me to keep up with family stories and get in touch with various different people.
I might not be Facebook savvy but I will get there now that I’m finally one of the 1.49 billion monthly users.
