Gregory Castillo, 22, a senior photographer for The Reporter has been hired as an intern at The Dallas Morning News for the second time.
Castillo first interned at the DMN in the summer of 2014 working on the paper’s news desk, serving as a reporter, photographer and videographer. He will be returning to the Texas-based publication in February of 2015 as a paid photo intern for twelve weeks.
“To me, getting another opportunity at The Morning News is an honor,” Castillo said. “I feel like I’m just as prepared as a reporter and as a photographer, since I’ll be working strictly for photo now.”
This semester, Castillo has been working as a multimedia intern at WLRN radio. He has also interned at the Miami Herald, developing his multimedia skills as a producer on the Continuous News Desk and as a staff photographer.
This summer Castillo covered trials, breaking news and cookie competitions at the DMN. He looks forward to returning there.
“I know I’ll love the city again, the people and the barbecue,” Castillo said. “And I feel like I can finish some stories I never got to complete.”
Castillo said his time at The Reporter has given him a place to sharpen his skills as a journalist: “I am who I am because of this paper.”
As a staff photographer with The Reporter, Castillo won first-place in Sports Photography from the Associated Collegiate Press in October of 2013. In addition, he has won eight first-place honors from the Florida College System Publications Association in topics such as: News Story, Feature Story, News Photo and Sports Photo.
