Former Reporter Sports Editor Wins $1,250 Journalism Scholarship

Scarlling Manzanarez, who served as The Reporter’s sports editor during the 2022-2023 school year, was one of six students nationwide awarded a $1,250 Associated Press Sports Editors scholarship.

The prize was awarded based on the students’ journalism work, academic record and financial need. Winners also received APSE student memberships.

Manzanarez was selected as the Tim Wheatley Scholarship winner.

“It gives me inspiration that there are people out there willing to support sports writers, [and] our passion [for] sports,” said Manzanarez, who was the only recipient from a community college.

To apply, students submitted their college transcripts, a personal statement and six writing samples.

Manzanarez graduated from Las Brisas Baptist High School in Managua, Nicaragua in 2018. She studied journalism for two years at Universidad Centroamericana before moving to Miami in December of 2020.

At The Reporter, she covered baseball, softball, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball.

Three months ago, Manzanarez was one of two Miami Dade College students awarded a $1,250 scholarship from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists South Florida chapter.

In April, the 21-year-old earned an associate’s degree in journalism from North Campus. This fall, Manzanarez will study sports journalism at the University of Florida. She aspires to cover a  Major League Baseball team one day.
