Enjoy A Night Of Stand Up Comedy At Just The Funny

If you’re in the need of some laughter and a reprieve from life’s aches, look no further than the bright yellow sign with red letters spelling out: “Just The Funny.”

Located at 3119 Coral Way, Just The Funny is a theater that hosts interactive comedy routines on a weekly basis.

This hidden gem has earned its place as the prime comedy hub in Miami.

This March, it’ll be celebrating its 23rd year of continuous entertainment. Laughter is timeless and they know how to deliver it.

If you wish to experience it yourself, you can visit them on a Friday or Saturday night.

On Fridays, you’ll have the choice between a traditional improv show full of audience interaction or a “DeathMatch” show where two teams compete in an all out comedy brawl performing fast-paced improv games competing for your laughs.

If stand up is more your speed, Fridays also offer the opportunity for courageous performers to go on during open mic calls during a one hour show.

On Saturdays, they offer a longer, fast-paced improvisation show titled “The Big Show” and a lineup of seasoned comedians doing their stand up comedy acts.

The weekly offerings tend to vary and include special events such as an upcoming Valentine-themed show. It’s always smart to look up the specific shows being offered each week.

While the type of shows may vary, something that stays consistent is the experience they hope their guests have.

My hope for our guests is to feel exhilarated by the agility of the live improv comedy experience. Particularly because the characters and scenes are inspired by our audiences every show, “ said co-owner Marlene Marcos. “Our mission is to not only entertain but to also educate others in this art form. Because as a performer, director and instructor, I am motivated to share with others how beneficial these skills can be in life beyond the stage.”

I certainly witnessed this when I attended their Saturday Stand Up show at the beginning of January. I walked into The Spotlight, an intimate cabaret style lounge, which is one of their three different stages.

As the name describes, a bright spotlight illuminated the raised platform of the stage. To its side stood a bar with a wide array of wine and craft beers for audience members of age.

My boyfriend and I sat on a table in front of the stage. We enjoyed a stellar lineup of comedians of varying styles, ages and backgrounds.

I even had the honor of being made fun of in the nicest way possible.

“The art of improv comedy is much like learning a new language,” Marcos said. “Once you have acquired the skills to understand it, you are eager to start speaking the language with others”

You can even experience this thrill yourself because they offer comedy classes in addition to their shows.

In accordance with CDC standards, fully vaccinated guests may remove their face coverings while they are seated. All tables and contact points are cleaned and sanitized in between performances.

Admission prices range from $10 to $20 depending on the show.
