Former Reporter Editor Lands Internship At The L.A. Times

Heidi Perez-Moreno, who served as editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2019-20 school year, has been selected as a 2022 summer intern at the L.A. Times.

The 21-year-old will write enterprise stories focused on the Latino community and culture for the L.A. Times En Español. Her first day will be June 13.

“I can’t wait to work on this amazing team and collaborate with reporters that have been an inspiration to me in my own writing and reporting,” Perez-Moreno said.

Last summer, Perez-Moreno was a reporting fellow at the Texas Tribune. She has also worked as a Spanish reporter at La Voz De Chatham in North Carolina.

During the past two years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Perez-Moreno has served as a university desk reporter, co-diversity, equity and inclusion officer, assistant audience engagement editor and the editorial managing editor at The Daily Tar Heel, the school’s independent student newspaper.

At The Reporter, Perez-Moreno served as editor-in-chief and social media director. She was named a College Media Association Pinnacle Awards finalist in the Best Breaking News Story category and was the Associated Collegiate Press’ Reporter of the Year in the two-year colleges’ category.

Perez-Moreno is currently the president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists at UNC. She will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in journalism next May.
