Internet HotSpots Expanding At The North Campus

A scenic lakeside view without Wi-Fi connection or a crowded library with Internet access used to be the dilemma Liuvis Martinez, a biology major at North Campus, use to face.

But thanks to ongoing Wi-Fi expansion at North Campus, students can now get Internet connection by the lake.

North Campus is currently working on expanding wireless access into Building 6, home to  ACCESS Services, according to Manny Perez the chief information officer at North Campus.

Additional access points will be placed around North Campus throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. The availability of the new coverage will depend on the infrastructure of the buildings and College funding.

“The new Wi-Fi availability is very good for me,” Martinez said. “I’m able to enjoy the view of the lake and catch up on online assignments especially when the winter comes and the weather gets a bit cooler. I won’t have to be stuck in the library.”

North Campus SGA President Anthony Correa is “excited to see students enjoying more of North Campuses facilities, while also utilizing the productivity that wireless coverage accommodates.”

“This availability will definitely enhance our college’s mission to provide students with the best learning environment possible,” Correa added.

The decision to expand wireless connection around campus was based on the increase in the number of students using mobile devices in recent years, Perez said.

“Extending our wireless network is part of an on-going North Campus initiative to ensure we continue to address the important technology needs of our students, faculty, and staff,” Perez said.

As for Martinez, she is just thankful her extended classroom now includes a lakeside view.
