North Campus Appoints New iCED Director

Stephanie Best was selected as the new director of the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy. She started on Feb. 23.

Her responsibilities include working with faculty, staff and community partners to encourage civic, democratic and voter engagement. 

“I want to create opportunities for students to connect, to find pathways for them to take what they are learning in their classrooms, whatever it may be, and use that to make positive change in the world,” Best said.  

Best has served as an adjunct faculty member at MDC since 2018, teaching English and English-learning courses.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in human and organizational development and Spanish literature from Vanderbilt University in 2013, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Lipscomb University in 2015 and a doctorate in higher education leadership from the University of Miami in 2022.

Ivette Gomez

Ivette Gomez, 19, is political science major in the Honors College at North Campus. Gomez, who graduated from Colegio Centro América in Nicaragua in 2023, will serve as Social Media Director and a news writer for The Reporter during the 2025-26 school year. She has a passion for global affairs and aspires to work in the United Nations.
