Padrón Campus Professor Receives Media Literacy Award

Emily Sendin, an English, literature and creative writing professor at the Eduardo J. Padrón Campus was awarded the Media Literacy Award by the National Council of Teachers of English during a virtual ceremony on Oct. 21.

The award recognizes one professor each year who implements innovative approaches and incorporates media into their teachings.

“Teaching is my calling, my life’s passion,” Sendin said. “The classroom is my refuge and my respite.”

Since becoming a Miami Dade College professor in 1999, Sendin has implemented media literacy in her teaching, whether it is through defining fake news or by explaining logical fallacies. She is also the founding adviser of Urbana, Padrón Campus’ hybrid literary arts student-run magazine.

Sendin earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English language and literature from Florida International University.
