School of Continuing Education And Professional Development Awarded $5,000 Grant For Health Literacy Program

Florida Blue Foundation and the Florida Literacy Coalition awarded the College’s School of Continuing Education And Professional Development a one-year grant to implement a health literacy initiative for adult education, family literacy and ESOL—English to Speakers of Other Languages—students at Hialeah Campus.

The program’s focus is to help students learn about health education while developing basic literacy and English language skills.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, it has helped more than 21,000 students throughout Florida.

According to the National Adult Assessment of Literacy, 14 percent of Americans don’t understand basic health information. Health illiteracy proved to be most prevalent among adults who didn’t complete high school or those who speak English as their second language.
