Sharks Looks To Dominate
Miami Dade’s Men’s basketball team is currently sitting at a record of 12-6.
Starting the season strong with winning seven of the their first nine games, Miami Dade felt difficulties during December having a negative 3-4 record for the month.
With not much time left for the season the Miami Dade Sharks plan to dominate. So far they have a positive record, winning 9-3 games on their home court and maintaining an even record of 2-2 for away games.
The Miami Dade College Men’s basketball team’s biggest competitors they look forward to facing are conference teams like Broward College, Indian River State College, Palm Beach State College, and Eastern Florida State College.
Eastern Florida having a 17-1 record, will be The Sharks ideal opponent to beat, looking to make a statement on beating the team with the most impressive record. Indian River will be a very anticipating game as well, due to their record being 12-6 just like The Sharks.
Broward and Palm Beach both have a 13-3 record, so ideally all the teams are in close quarters with one another with the exception of Eastern Florida.
At the moment The Shark’s most accumulative points in a game is 99 against Rise Academy, where freshman center, Trayvond Massenburg put up 19 points with three blocks, and sophomore guard, Shane Rector recorded 20 points, five assists, and two steals.
Rector is currently leading the team in points with 15.2 points a game, while being a great distributor with his team high 4.8 assists a game.
Rector’s humbleness keeps him grounded, but he knows he is the one who speaks up to his teammates, having experience playing at The University of Missouri, a Division One school.
Having new teammates in a team where seven players are freshmen and three are sophomores including returning player Jaylin Gilbert, their can be struggles for team chemistry.
Some people think having one returning player and the rest of the squad being brand new can be frustrating and hard to motivate.
“It is better to have a good young team,” said Rector. “Hungry to win.”
Rector being a new player himself believes that if the team keeps improving in practice and sticking to the game plan, there is no way they can lose. Rector’s ideal professional team he aspires to be play for is the New York City Knicks.
Rector is not the only one who believes those who practice hard will see results in the game; Coach Cowherd has the same mentality as the state championship is closely approaching.
Cowherd has a game plan for every team he plans to take down, he wants the team to master how the opponents dribble, shoot, and handle themselves on the court.
“Sharpness, maturity, and accountability are our biggest struggles this season,” said Cowherd.
Every practice each of these are discussed, and perfected in order to put their best abilities out on the court. Cowherd recognizes that most of the team is made up of freshmen, who are young and can be challenging at times.
The end result to this is these boys will learn that being held accountable and having responsibility are not just practiced in basketball, but in real life as well.
