Wolfson Campus Alumnus Tabbed As Newman Civic Fellow
Arquímedes “Archie” Rivero, a recent Wolfson Campus Honors College graduate, was named a Newman Civic Fellow on May 1.
The honor, issued by Campus Compact, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, recognizes students’ leadership and commitment to social change.
Rivero will participate in a year-long program that provides students with mentoring and scholarship opportunities to develop service projects.
“It means everything to me,” Rivero said. “When I found out, honestly, I got very emotional, very excited because you do a lot of these things never expecting to be recognized for [them]; you do it out of love and out of care because these things motivate and impassion you.”
This past academic year, the 19-year-old served as president of the Student Government Association at Wolfson Campus and as the SGA Board of Trustees representative.
During his term, SGA launched the Campus Response Committee to answer students’ questions, and partnered with Miami-Dade County District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins’ and District 7 Commissioner Raquel A. Regalado’s offices to participate in food distributions.
Rivero graduated with an associate’s degree in economics and international relations from the Honors College in April. He aspires to transfer to Georgetown University in the fall to study international political economy and combat food insecurity through non-profit organizations.
