Eduardo J. Padrón Campus Student Receives $7,500 Scholarship

Isabella Martinez Alvarez, an Honors College student at Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, has been awarded the Hites Transfer Scholarship.

The 20-year-old is one of 10 students nationwide to receive the $7,500 prize.

To qualify, applicants had to be a Phi Theta Member in good standing with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and must plan to attend a four-year institution in the fall. More than 1,900 students from two-year institutions applied.

“It was really unexpected for me,” Alvarez said. “I will be able to be closer to finishing my bachelor’s degree debt-free.”

While serving as the vice president of her campus’ Phi Theta Kappa, Alvarez conducted a research project with the University of Florida about DNA findings in seeds. She also raised $20,000 for the H.E.A.L from Within, Honors in Action Project.

Alvarez, who graduated from Miami Dade College with a 3.9 GPA, plans to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study biology.
