Homestead Campus Selects New Honors College Director

Takevess C. Hatcher was appointed director of the Honors College at Homestead Campus on May 20.

Hatcher will guide Honors College students throughout their academic endeavors and the transfer process. He aims to expand internship and volunteer opportunities.

“I really want students [in] the Honors College to be engaged within the community of Homestead,” Hatcher said.

Hatcher’s history at Miami Dade College dates back to 1999. He worked as a student assistant and part-time clerk in the admissions and registration department for five years. In 2019, he returned to MDC as an academic advisor.

Prior to his current role, Hatcher served as the enrollment specialist for the campus’ Title V STEM Wave Program for nearly three years. He coordinated initiatives such as boot camps and workshops to encourage high school students throughout low-income communities to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The 43-year-old has also served as an adjunct professor in the social sciences department since 2022.

Outside of MDC, Hatcher has worked as a mental health specialist at Community Health of South Florida, a non-profit health care organization, and as an elementary school teacher for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system.

Currently, he serves as a minister at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Perrine,  is president of the Iota Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha—the oldest intercollegiate fraternity for Black men in the United States—and owns HTC Tax Services, a tax preparation company in Florida City.

Hatcher earned an associate’s degree in general studies from MDC in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Nova Southeastern University in 2005. Fourteen years later, he obtained a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Union Institute & University, followed by a doctorate in public policy and social change in 2023.
