The Best Things In Life Come Unexpectedly

Take a second to think about the last time a great thing happened to you unexpectedly and how you got there.

I grew up in a one paycheck family, which came from my hardworking and loving mother. Because of this, there were things my mom simply could not afford to give my sister and me.

Because I was the youngest in the family, I was the last to get access to materialistic things like iPhones. In order to help my mom and pamper myself, I got a job at the age of 16.

I have been working for almost three years and although it’s been tough to manage my work and school schedule, it has thankfully worked out.

Working in customer service and the food service industry requires you to develop a lot of patience, people and listening skills and time management. Being able to multitask is a must.

Patience comes in handy when customers take too long to order during rush hour and you need to remain patient and keep a smile on your face.

But every now and then we get customers who take complaining to another level. Once a client came back with the hot coffee we had prepared for him and threw it at my co-worker. That required a hospital visit.

However, I have also made friendships that I’ll cherish and remember forever. My co-workers have become my second family and it would hurt to say goodbye to them if they or I left for another job.

One of my first work friends was Oriel. She helped me break out of my shell. And although Oriel quit almost two years ago, we still talk and see each other every once in  a while.

Although having a job and being a college student can be tedious, I’m glad I started to learn how to manage my time between work and my studies while in high school.

I may have stepped into the work world just to buy myself a phone, but I’ve gained more than just materialistic things. Now I have experiences, lessons and relationships that I know will last a lifetime.

Sometimes you start with something small and come out on the other side with more than you could ask for.
